Community Projects

The Permaculture Trust runs a range of projects in the community aiming to teach people aboutthe benefits of growing organic food and sustainable gardening. Wewould like to thank our sponsors and funders for supporting our work inthis area.

The Art of the Good Life Expo

In 2005, the Trust was approached to organise an environmental expo, inconjunction with the popular annual  Right Bank Arts Festival. Thefirst one ran in February 2006, and was well received. The Expo aims tobring together a range of exhibitors, speakers and entertainmentrelating to living sustainability and environmental awareness. Community Gardens

The Trust has been involved with a number of different community gardens,  giving advise in establishing the gardens and ongoing facilitation in the maintenance of them .
Waimarie Community Gardens in Hamilton East:
This garden was established in 2002 as a joint effort between The Permaculture Trust, Waimarie Community House & Marlborough House, mental health agency.
Situated next to the community house was an empty section owned by the council who generously allowed the use of the land for the project.
This garden has flourished with the help from a few disability agencies & the public.

Intially the class were given a guided tour of the sustainable backyard in the Hamilton Gardens for ideas and inspiration

The worm baths on ashfelt were the beginings of the school site.

The completion of the site with the worm baths moved to the shadier side.

Garden Tours

For the past few years the Trust has organised garden tours within Hamilton of award winning edible gardens.
The gardeners have kindly opened up their properties for members of the public to view.
Each garden is unique in itself & provides ideas & inspiration for others to take home to their own gardens

Workshops

The Permaculture has presented a number of different workshops.

The most recent being a weekend workshop on organic gardening held in Coromandel's Community garden.
Participants arrived from various towns around the district & enjoyed 2 days of glorious Coromandel weather in the perfect setting of the community garden.
There were hands on projects such as assembling a no-dig garden, the making of liquid fertilizer & a worm farm & sorting a practical system for composting.    The garden & the people gained  from these projects.

Compost & Vermiculture talks are regularly held in The Sustainable backyard.

  EARTH OVEN WORKSHOP

This successful workshop was well attended with a demand for 3 more to be held next year due to its popularity & a waiting list of keen participants.
It was faciltiated by Paul Peterson from Raglan who is well experienced in earth building & energy conservation.
The venue was the Hamilton East community garden in Wellington Street where the oven is now installed & available for public use.
We have yet to make up a sign on directions for use, that will come.
We not only got our hands & feet dirty by being involved in the mixing & making of the adobe bricks but we also gained a lot of knowledge & know how along with other ways to use the adobe mix in your garden such as garden surrounds & sculptered boulders.
If you are interested in attending a earth building workshop which is organised by the Permaculture Trust, contact us to go on the waiting list.
